I once thought land was merely an asset — something to be bought, sold, and quantified.
Until one late afternoon near year’s end, when a friend shared a story about his father.
Years ago, his father sold a small plot of land by a canal — the very place where the two had planted their first mangrove trees.
That day, before signing the papers, he said only one thing:
“Land isn’t as important as knowledge. If you receive a proper education, that will be your greatest asset.”
His son understood. Yet in his father’s eyes, there lingered something quiet — a sentiment left unspoken.
Because that land was more than just soil.
It was his father’s childhood, his own — filled with sun-drenched summer afternoons, muddy days spent planting and watering together.
It was the breath of a time marked by hardship, yet overflowing with love.
He left the village, moved to the city, studied, built a life.
Years passed, swept along by the pace of living. But one thing remained — a silent promise he made to himself.
Until one day, he returned to his hometown — where the canal still flowed, the muddy banks still bore the footprints of youth, and the mangroves bloomed white once more.
And this time, he was the one who bought back that very piece of land.
Not to invest.
Not to build a house.
But to preserve a fragment of memory, a gesture of gratitude — to his father, and to the seasons of rising water that had come and gone.
“My father sold land so I could have a future,” he said, voice soft as wind.
“And I… I just want to plant mangroves with my child, so my father may smile.”
To him, that land is where the mangrove seasons bear fruit again — where love doesn’t fade, but transforms into memory, anchored deep within the heart.
